Altering Vowel Quality改变元音质量

One characteristic that distinguishes styles like R&B, rock, blues, and gospel is the quality of the vowel. There is an overall consistency among these styles that is important to recognize and practice. How you pronounce words will vary depending on where you're from, so your vowels may change when you switch from speaking to singing.
R&B、摇滚、蓝调和福音音乐等风格的一个特点是元音的质量。这些风格之间存在着整体的一致性,这一点值得认识和练习。你的发音会因地域而异,所以当你从说话转为唱歌时,你的元音可能会发生变化。

For example, how do you pronounce the word, "baby?" Is it "bay-ee-BEE?" or "BAY-bay" or "BAY-bee."
例如,你如何发音单词“baby”?是“bay-ee-BEE”吗?还是“BAY-bay”或“BAY-bee”?

Listen to the example below to determine how you pronounce baby:
请听下面的例子,以确定您如何发音“宝宝”:

No matter which way you speak the word "baby", it will change when you are singing.
无论你如何说“宝宝”这个词,当你唱歌时它都会发生变化。

If you are singing "baby" in an R&B vocal line that begins high in your register, you will want to open up the vowel while you start the run, and complete the word at the end of the run, like this:
如果你在 R&B 唱腔中唱“宝贝”,且起始音调较高,你需要在开始跑音时打开元音,并在跑音结束时完成单词,就像这样:

Here's another example. Words that have an "a" vowel are often pronounced more like the "a" sound in "cat," such as in "come back." In this sample recording, the words are first spoken and then sung in two ways, showing how the "a" sound can be utilized.
这里还有一个例子。以“a”元音结尾的单词通常发音更接近“cat”中的“a”音,例如在“come back”中。在这个样本录音中,单词首先被说出,然后以两种方式被唱出,展示了如何利用“a”音。

"Ee" is of course a vowel sound that is heard throughout the English language. It is produced when the tongue pulls up in the mouth, which also pulls some on the larynx where your vocal folds are. When the pitch you are singing is lower in your range, you are able to sing words with "ee" much as you would speak them, however when the pitch is higher in your range, the "ee" vowel becomes tighter. If you were to sing it here as you speak it, it would become shrill, tight, and difficult to sing.
“Ee”当然是一种在英语中普遍存在的元音音素。它是当舌头在口腔中上提时产生的,这也会拉动喉部,那里的声带也会随之移动。当你唱的音调在你音域内较低时,你能够像说话一样唱出带有“ee”的单词,然而当音调在你音域内较高时,“ee”元音会变得更加紧绷。如果你像说话一样在这里唱它,它会变得尖锐、紧绷且难以唱出。
