Graded Assignment: Module 4 Peer Review Assignment

In this assignment, we will start our journey of using design thinking to solve a challenge. Your output from this assignment might be something you can work on as you learn the skills in software and hardware in course three and four. This approach is described in detail and adapted from the resource by the firm IDEO on human centered design (see module readings on human centered design).

In this assignment, you will define a problem, reframe it as a design challenge, specify the end goal to meet the challenge, document any constraints, and define what success looks like.

Problem or Wish

When looking around for problems or unmet needs, watch for complaints, such as "It annoys me that..." or wishes, such as "I wish we could...." Either approach can get you thinking on the right track. You might find multiple problems/wishes. Pick one that inspires you most. It turns out that a challenge that impacts others motivates us more.

Design Challenge

Start with the problem/wish you selected and reframe it as a challenge. Begin your question with “How might we...” or HMW for short. This turns the problems you see into opportunities for design! State the challenge as a HMW statement. You might have multiple HMW statements for addressing the same problem/wish.

Is there a need?

If you have multiple HMW statements, pick one to focus on. Describe the challenge you picked, and explain how/why there is a need for this idea.

Describe the End Goal

Next, think about the end goals (a new product, an improved/redesigned product), explain how 3D printing can help in the process, and document any constraints (what will prevent you from reaching the goal).

Success!!

Finally, look ahead and write about how you would define success.

Please give your response in 400-500 words.

Response:

Problem or Wish:
I have a small pot that I use frequently, but I struggle to find a suitable place to store its lid when cooking. The existing pot lid holders on the market are either too large or not designed for small pots, which makes them impractical for my needs. This has led me to think, “I wish I could have a custom-sized pot lid holder that fits my small pot perfectly.”

Design Challenge:
Reframing this problem as a design challenge, I ask: “How might we design a compact, customizable pot lid holder that fits small pots and optimizes kitchen space?” Another related HMW statement could be: “How might we create a pot lid holder that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing to complement modern kitchen designs?”

Is There a Need?
I chose the first HMW statement because it directly addresses a common issue faced by many people who own small pots or unconventional cookware. Standardized kitchen accessories often fail to meet the needs of users with unique or specialized items, leading to frustration and inefficiency. A customizable pot lid holder would not only solve my problem but also benefit others who face similar challenges. The need for this idea is evident in the growing demand for personalized and space-saving kitchen solutions, especially in urban areas where kitchen space is often limited.

Describe the End Goal:
The end goal is to create a customizable, 3D-printed pot lid holder that is specifically designed for small pots. The holder should be compact, stable, and easy to clean, with a design that complements modern kitchen aesthetics. It should also be adjustable or modular to accommodate different lid sizes and shapes.

3D printing can play a crucial role in achieving this goal. It allows for rapid prototyping, enabling me to test and refine the design quickly. Additionally, 3D printing supports customization, so users can input their pot lid dimensions to create a holder that fits perfectly. The process also reduces material waste compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

However, there are some constraints to consider:

  1. Material Selection: The holder must be made from a food-safe, heat-resistant material that can withstand steam and occasional contact with water.
  2. Design Complexity: The holder must be simple enough to print without requiring excessive support structures or post-processing.
  3. Cost: The final product should be affordable for everyday users, which may limit the choice of materials and printing technologies.

Success!!
I would define success as creating a functional, aesthetically pleasing pot lid holder that fits my small pot perfectly and enhances my cooking experience. Success would also mean that the design is scalable and adaptable, allowing others to customize it for their own needs. If the holder is easy to produce, affordable, and well-received by users, it could inspire further innovations in personalized kitchen accessories. Ultimately, success would be measured by the positive impact it has on users’ daily lives, making their kitchens more organized and efficient.
