For your assignments in this course I am asking you to select a single subject you’d like to work with. To help you, you'll need to prepare a substantial amount of visual reference material.

There's no set way to conduct this visual research, but here are a few guidelines:

  1. Choose a subject you’ll enjoy working with and can find a lot of images and reference material. I suggest choosing an animal, as an animal is something concrete and tangible (for example, I selected "giraffe" as my imagemaking topic, as you might have already observed). Save abstract ideas like “friendly” for a different project. Similarly, a broad subject like "dogs" is a lot more work; restricting your subject to "pointed-eared dogs" or "poodles" will help you. But if you choose something with a wider scope make sure you really scrutinize all aspects of that subject.
  2. Research your subject: become as familiar and knowledgeable as possible about it. If you picked an animal, what are its habits, habitat, and attributes? Look at the structure or construction or skeleton; its coat or skin; the shape of its eyes and ears. Does it make sounds or give off certain odors? How does it move? Is it smooth or rough? Furry or scaled or feathery? Search for a video of its movements. What are the gravitational pulls on your animal? How does the creature move? How does weather affect it? What are its most distinguishing features?
  3. Gather source images and screen grabs to refer to for imagemaking and put them in a folder. If you decide to select an animal as a topic, attempt to find images of the animal that clearly show the whole body as well as close-ups of its head and face, maybe its feet, or any images that establish it as distinct from other living beings. Try to find images that are from a distance too, or from a variety of vantage points. You may find it helpful to get a realistic scale model of your animal so you can observe its form more closely, and draw or photograph it from different angles. If you select an object, something with an interesting shape may lend itself better to making a lot of iterations; a very simple shape can be kind of challenging.
  4. Present your research in a way that makes sense to your practice. In this course, I am asking you to collect and assemble your research into a standalone mood board, but depending on the project you could also use an online tool. Pinterest is a great platform for this; Tumblr and Instagram can also work. You could also paste images into a sketchbook, or sketch your images from select source material. Try different approaches and find what works best for you and your practice.
