Instructions 说明
In this short peer-assessed assignment, you will research a typeface that we did not look at—or looked at only briefly—in the case studies. In the process, you’ll expand your typographic knowledge, get a first-
hand sense of how typefaces are expressive of their historical and technological context, and build some original text content that you can use in the next two assignments.

Avenir: The Future of Typeface Design
Subtitle: A Modern Sans Serif for a Futuristic World
Paragraph 1:
Avenir, designed by the Swiss typeface designer Adrian Frutiger in 1988, is one of the most prominent sans-serif fonts of the late 20th century. Its name, meaning “future” in French, reflects Frutiger’s vision of a typeface that blends timeless elegance with a modern sensibility. Avenir was created during a period when digital typography was rapidly advancing, making it a forward-thinking design suited for both print and emerging digital mediums. Frutiger’s goal was to produce a geometric sans serif that could remain legible at various sizes while also being highly versatile for both headlines and body text. It combines the clean simplicity of early 20th-century geometric sans serifs, like Futura, with the humanist influences of earlier typefaces. The font became a favorite in corporate branding, signage, and print media, with notable uses in companies such as Apple and in the branding of Swiss institutions.
Paragraph 2:
Avenir is a geometric sans-serif typeface characterized by its clean, round shapes, and balanced proportions. It features a medium to high x-height, making it highly legible and readable even in small sizes. The font’s letterforms are open and uniform, with subtle contrasts between thick and thin strokes. The “a” and “g” have a distinctive design that stands out from more traditional sans serifs. The typeface is classified as a humanist sans-serif, meaning that it draws inspiration from both geometric shapes and natural curves. Its modern, neutral, and highly legible design evokes feelings of clarity, precision, and efficiency. Avenir’s design is ideal for use in both print and digital contexts, as it maintains legibility across varying display technologies.
