Instructions 说明

In this final assignment, you will use the same text content from the last two assignments to design
a type-only poster about your typeface. In the process, you’ll try your hand at making expressive typography, and get a feel for how the different concerns of typography—from typesetting conventions, to hierarchy, to composition, to meaning-making—all come together in a piece of graphic design.

Step-By-Step Assignment Instructions

Part 1: Create a Title Treatment

Review your research and consider the connotations of your typeface. What feelings, mood, time period, and ideas does it conjure up? If your typeface were a person, what kind of personality would it have? Jot down some of these ideas as a few sentences—you’ll be submitting this text along with your poster.

Copy your title (the name of your typeface) into a blank tabloid-size (11 x 17 inch) document. Begin manipulating it to try to express one or more of the connotations you’ve identified. Start by playing with the variables of conventional typesetting—type style, size, weight, color, and arrangement—to try to convey your intended meaning. Then consider more radical moves—break it up, rotate it, distort
it, crop it. Experiment and have fun!

Once you have a type treatment you like, consider its placement. Scale and arrange the type to break up and define the space of the poster.

Part 2: Add Secondary Type

Once you are satisfied with your title type, add in the rest of your content from the last assignments—your subtitle, 2 paragraphs, and sources. There should be at least two levels of hierarchy between your title and secondary type. You could alter the hierarchy by playing with scale, leading, color, shape, or arrangement of this text to work with your title.

Finally, find a way to give your poster some extra flair. Consider adding color, changing the background color, tweaking the placement of elements, making the type bigger or smaller. Make things interesting, but try to keep the type legible.

Export your final composition as a PDF and upload it below, along with the initial text about the connotative ideas behind your typeface.
