Identify the Skin Condition

It is helpful if you can initially identify a skin condition a consumer may be suffering from. This does not mean you can officially diagnose a consumer based on what you see—let’s leave that to dermatologists—but you should know enough about their appearance to understand what future product recommendations could look like for such a consumer. In making product recommendations, a cosmetologist must coordinate their choices with any recommendations the dermatologist makes.

For instance, a customer comes in with visible redness and flaking on their face. While not diagnosing, you recognize these as possible signs of psoriasis. You check if they’ve been to a dermatologist, and yes, your hunch was correct: the customer reports that the dermatologist’s diagnosis is psoriasis. Moreover, the dermatologist advised the consumer to avoid harsh exfoliants or fragrances. So, you suggest gentle, hydrating products to be in step with the dermatologist’s advice.

Next, you will have some practice identifying skin conditions from images. Prepare yourself as these images of skin conditions are not pleasant to look at, but there is a point to this.
