What is peer review?

Learning a practice isn’t just about knowledge acquisition. To learn about making work, we need to look at the work of others, and also be able to talk about it in an intelligent way. At CalArts, we call this process critique. We consider critique and the feedback that accompanies it to be an essential part of the design process. In this course there may be some auto-graded quizzes, but most of the work you’ll be doing is completing open-ended assignments graded through peer review in order to emulate the group critique that is the hallmark of much of the teaching that happens at CalArts. A peer reviewed assignment consists of two parts: the submission and the review. You must complete the assignment successfully according to the assignment instructions, and then review the minimum number of peers using the provided rubric. You will receive a grade on your assignment plus feedback from your peers after you have completed both parts. The next series of videos will describe how this process works in more detail. Design and animation credits for the videos in this series go to our Graphic Design students Emily Lew (BFA 4) and Izzy Lerman (BFA 3).
