- Tailor your portfolio for your audience. When applying to full-time programs, your portfolio can be a mix of styles and techniques, and it should show a blend of technical proficiency with software as well as traditional craft skill. If you are applying for freelance work, clients may look for areas of expertise and focus, and it is up to you to make sure your portfolio supports your artist statement and working philosophy.

Show that you can think and work like a designer, even if you still have to improve technical or craft skills while building your knowledge base of design.
