Choosing a design program

You can find plenty of options studying design part-time or online (i.e. with CalArts’ Graphic Design Specialization). However a full-time graphic design program will provide you with a rigorous atmosphere for studying graphic design, and give you access to resources that are unavailable outside of school. Full-time programs facilities and technology to support your developing creative practice. They are also dedicated spaces for peer and faculty critique. You will be able to study, make, and talk about graphic design in a focused and stimulating environment. Furthermore, a full-time program will have career-building resources, a strong alumni network, and access to other creative disciplines to enrich your education.

Here are a few things to consider when looking at full-time graphic design programs, both for undergraduate and graduate study.

  • Investigate the work of the students, faculty, and recent alumni. You can easily do this with some quick searches online, or check to see if the school has an online gallery showcasing student and faculty work. This will show the stylistic leanings of the program, the conceptual and historical underpinnings of the work, and the involvement of technology. Do you admire the work, or does it excite you? Does the work respond to fields or topics which inspire you? Does the work reveal graphic design knowledge or concepts that you are interesting in investigating?
  • Consider if and how you want to specialize in the field. You may want a school with an expertise in history and research of graphic design, or maybe you want interaction design to be the focus of your work. Take a look at the curriculum to understand what opportunities of focus and skill acquisition exist in the program.
  • Understand your opportunities to make work outside of the classroom. Do you want to collaborate with students in other programs or people outside of the school? What would these opportunities look like? And what opportunities exist immediately after school? Talk to the teachers, current students, and recent alumni to understand their motivations and experiences in and after the program.
  • Investigate the environment. Visit the school and sit in on a critique if you can. If you can’t travel to the program, try to get a sense of the physical environment, the resources available to students (like printmaking facilities and computer facilities), as well as the methods of teaching. Graphic design programs are often very intensive, so make sure you are comfortable working in that atmosphere!
  • Consider the diversity of the students and faculty in all forms. As a graphic designer, you will study how we experience messages in our world as much as you will be creating and controlling those messages. Diversity can strengthen your work and help you understand how to design for different contexts and points of view.
  • Not to be forgotten: consider the important factors of the location and the costs of attending any program.
