In this assignment (described in two parts), I'd like you to create 21 graphic shapes. It sounds like a lot but they are simple and fast to make. You can use geometric forms drawn on the computer, and you can overlap shapes to make them more complex. The goal is to get you to experience how shapes fit together and to play with negative and positive spatial relationships. By the end, you will refine your images to a final set of three for feedback.

There are two parts to this assignment, though do not upload or share Part 1 (it is preparation only).

Part 1: Negative/Positive 第一部分：负/正
Make a series of 12 shapes. Make each one about 5 x 5 inches, and place each one in the middle of an 8.5 x 11” or A4 (vertical) sheet of paper. Black and white only.
制作 12 个形状。每个形状大约 5 x 5 英寸，并将每个形状放置在 8.5 x 11”或 A4（竖向）纸张的中间。仅黑白两色。
Combine 6 of the shapes with 6 others, to make 6 new marks that use positive and negative (black and white) space.

Combine 3 of these new shapes with 3 others to make 3 new marks that use positive and negative (black and white) space.

Part 2: Complimentary/Contrast 第二部分：互补/对比
Take your 12 original images from Part 1 and color each shape, including the background of each frame. Experiment with the figure/ground relationship in color.

Take your 9 other, more complex, images from Part 1 and color each individual component shape, including the background of each frame. Experiment with complementary and contrasting palettes.

Make each image 5 x 5 inches, and place each one in the middle of an 8.5 x 11” or A4 (vertical) sheet of paper. Please work in color.

Finally, select your 3 favorite color images to upload for peer review. Bundle these 3 images into a single PDF document and upload.
