Your artist statement is an evaluation of your motivations, methodologies, stylistic tendencies, and narratives around your work. Your statement is not fixed—it will undoubtedly evolve throughout your career—but it is often a key component of your application for full-time graphic design programs and job cover letters. It can also be a motivating factor for a client to choose you for freelance projects.

In your artist statement, you should convey your relationship to graphic design, including what sparked your interest in graphic design, as well as your current knowledge or viewpoints on graphic design as a whole. What pulls you in, excites you, and why? What opportunities or shortcomings do you see in graphic design? To help develop these viewpoints, continuously look at new graphic design work and try to articulate your opinions about that work. Take notes and talk about the work with your peers. Also, seek out the writings and work of pivotal designers throughout graphic design and art history, breaking down their motivations, contexts, technologies, and stylistic choices. All of this research will not only help you develop your “eye” for graphic design, but will also give you a basis of knowledge in evaluating new design, including your own.

Your artist statement should also include descriptions of your design projects, past experience in the visual arts and graphic design, as well as your methods for approaching new work. This is what we call metacognition: understanding the thoughts and processes surrounding your work. Your statement should help the reader understand your work process, the specific roles you had in various projects, and your reflections on the work after completion.
