Following the previous brief, 4.1: Single Contrasts, in this optional assignment I'd like you to continue with creating abstract compositions that examine visual contrast. The goal is to get you to push those aspects of contrast further and experience, understand, and control basic visual contrasts.

There are two parts to this assignment.

As before, you are asked to take a specific number of geometric shapes (any combination of circles, squares, or triangles) and combine them to illustrate multiple aspects of these compositional contrasts:

For each composition, work at approximately 7 x 7 inches each, in the middle of an 8.5 x 11” or A4 (vertical) sheet of paper. Keep working in black and white only.

There’s no single right or wrong answer for each composition; the main goal is to get you experiencing composition by making! Use this exercise as a way to investigate the possibilities of composition.

Note that you are permitted to scale the objects, or allow them to overlap, touch, rotate, or run off the edge (bleed), but the proportion of the shape must stay constant (no distortion or slicing).

This assignment is optional but recommended. Use it as a chance to experiment with composition. What you learn here can be used in a more complex "real world" piece of design in Brief 4.3: Applied Fundamentals. The best way to learn graphic design is by making graphic design! Take advantage of this opportunity to get feedback from your peers before you proceed, and give your peers some feedback in return.
