Module 04 · Stress and Trauma-Related Disorders

Open Reflection Question

Coursera ↗

Each module in this course will end with an open reflection question. You may discuss these reflections in the Discussion Forums, but you are not required to turn anything in and you will not be assessed on it. I encourage you to write down your thoughts somewhere - in a journal that you keep, for instance, or on a Google Doc or similar digital space. Throughout the course - and the entire Abnormal Psychology specialization - you can refer to your reflections and consider how your views may or may not be changing.

Module 4 Reflection Question

The Sibrava et. al. study found a chronic course of PTSD among African American and Latinx participants. What are your thoughts about assigning a psychological disorder label to a person who is struggling with the cumulative impact of chronic racial discrimination and trauma?  Do you think it highlights and validates the emotional damage done by these experiences?  Do you think it inappropriately places the “problem,” along with the responsibility for change, within the individual rather than in and on the structures and systems that created it?
