As discussed in our first module, Clifford Beers was diagnosed as mentally ill and spent time in and out of psychiatric hospitals. His autobiography chronicles these experiences and reports how he himself regained his mental health, eventually working to improved conditions for those individuals who suffer from mental distress. You have been provided with the first and last chapters of his autobiography, A Mind that Found Itself, published in 1908.  After reading these chapters, write a brief essay describing 3 features of Beers' perspective on mental illness that stand out as prescient for the times and/or those that depart from what were then the conventional expert views about mental illness around the turn of the century.

Clifford Beers' A Mind that Found Itself, though well over a century old, remains a classic text on recovery from mental illness. As indicated in the chapters from which you will read, Beers became a vocal critic of the mental health system of his time.
