The physician George Beard is recognized as the discoverer of neurasthenia (though he was not the only one who described the symptoms and named the mental condition). As you will see in this excerpt from his American Nervousness (1881), Beard forwarded a bold and clear claim that Americans were especially susceptible to that ‘disease’.
