How Do You Decide If You Like Someone?
Introduction to Impression Formation
If you ask people how they decide whether they like someone or not, you will often hear answers like “I just do” or “It just feels right.” Put another way, people often don’t have insight into the processes that result in liking another person.
Realize, however, that deciding we like someone is several steps down the line after we meet them. So, let’s look at an earlier stage of meeting a new person: deciding what that person is like.
Reflection Activity
Think about and then describe, to the best of your ability, the mental processes that occur when you’re trying to decide what someone is like. What steps do you take or what factors do you consider when trying to decide what someone is like?
Oftentimes, people have a hard time answering questions like this because they force people to think carefully about mental processes that largely occur automatically. Fortunately, psychologists have put a lot of time into researching what really goes on inside people’s heads when they meet a new person and try to decide what that person is like—a process called impression formation. We’re going to be focusing on the results of that research in this section of the course.
