Note that all psychological research is performed using samples of participants recruited from areas where the research is performed. In most cases, these samples will represent only a portion of the demographic groups seen in the world. Samples may not fully represent groups such as people with disabilities, minority sexual and gender populations, or people from certain geographic areas, among other possibilities. As a result, the study may only support conclusions relevant for the groups included in the sample and those conclusions may not generalize to groups not included in the sample. Researchers in the psychological sciences, as well as other scientific areas, are acknowledging these limitations and working toward ensuring more equitable practices in future research.
