Visually Representing Your Self-Concept

Now that you have a basic understanding of what the self-concept is, you will have the opportunity to sketch your own self-concept in the following activity: Diagram Your Self-Concept.

Diagram Your Self-Concept

This is an activity that will enhance your understanding of the information presented in this module. If you've subscribed to the specialization, open your workbook and listen to the audio file for instructions for how to complete the activity. If you haven't subscribed to the specialization, listen to the audio file to have an alternate version of the activity described to you. When you're finished, continue with the course.

Diving More Deeply Into Your Self-Concept

Now that you’ve visually represented multiple aspects of your self-concept, in the Examining Your Self-Concept activity, we’re going to focus on one of those aspects more deeply.

Examining Your Self-Concept

This is an activity that will enhance your understanding of the information presented in this module. If you've subscribed to the specialization, open your workbook and listen to the audio file for instructions for how to complete the activity. If you haven't subscribed to the specialization, listen to the audio file to have an alternate version of the activity described to you. When you're finished, continue with the course.

These activities were designed to illustrate how large and complex your self-concept can be. Each of the attributes that you listed in the “I Am” task has many more concepts linked to it, with even more concepts linked to those, and so on. There will also be links between many of these ideas. This is why we call the self the most detailed mental structure that people have.

Schematicity 方案性

Let’s also note that not all portions of the self-concept are equally important. Think back to the associative network that you drew in the Examining Your Self-Concept activity. If you think about how much the ideas you included are interconnected, how many more ideas you can generate, and how often you use this portion of your self-concept, you will start to see the variables that might affect how central this part of your self-concept is to your life. Markus (1977) coined a term for portions of the self-concept (or, in other words, self-definitions) that are always present in our minds. She says that these portions are schematic, and we, in turn, may be schematic on a particular dimension.

For example, someone to whom humor is very important might spend a lot of time watching comedy clips on social media, try their hand at stand-up comedy, and consistently choose to make joking responses to questions as opposed to serious ones. This person may be schematic on the concept of humor. We will talk about the consequences of schematicity later in this module. For now, consider what dimensions of your self might be schematic for you.
