You’ve now taken a survey that measures the extent to which you endorse items consistent with an independent self-concept and the extent to which you endorse items consistent with an interdependent self-concept (Singelis, 1994). As we said before, regardless of the culture that you come from, both self-representations are present in your self-concept. This scale determines to what degree each is present. Put another way, your scores from the activity indicate your degree of independence and interdependence regardless of whether you are from a collectivistic or individualistic culture.
Your scores for each type of self-concept range from 1 to 7, with 1 being the lowest and 7 the highest. It is important to understand that independence and interdependence are not polar opposites. Rather, they are separate self-representations that are present in varying degrees in all of us.
If you strongly identify as having an independent self-concept, your behaviors typically seek to affirm your core attributes. Conversely, if you strongly identify as having an interdependent self-concept, the need to express your core attributes is secondary to your relationships with others (Markus & Kitayama, 1991).
